GTT books new tank order for LNG-powered containerships

French LNG containment giant GTT has won a new order from South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries for LNG-powered containerships.

Under the new deal, GTT will design tanks of three LNG-powered vessels, each with a capacity of 7,900 containers.

GTT said in a statement on Thursday that the three containerships would each get 6000-cbm LNG fuel tanks.

The tanks will feature GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane containment technology.

HSHI would deliver the vessels to an unidentified owner in the first half of 2024, GTT said without providing any additional information.

The new order from HSHI comes about two weeks after the Korean yard awarded a deal to GTT for six large LNG-powered containerships.

HSHI’s parent KSOE revealed this order for three 7,900-teu LNG-powered containerships on January 17.

KSOE said that HSHI would build the ships for an unidentified Asian shipowner for about 418.6 billion won ($351 million).

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that Idan Ofer’s Eastern Pacific Shipping was behind this order.

After that, Israel’s Zim said it would take on charter three 7,000-teu LNG-powered container vessels from a shipping company that is affiliated with its largest shareholder Kenon Holdings, owned by Idan Ofer.
