Rotterdam LNG throughput up 12.4 percent in 2021

LNG throughput in the port of Rotterdam rose 12.4 percent last year on the back of higher gas prices in Europe.

The port, home to the first and only Dutch large LNG import terminal Gate, said in its 2021 report that total LNG throughput reached 7.01 million mt in the January-December period, compared to 6.24 million mt in the year before.

Incoming LNG volumes rose 10.8 percent to 6.38 million mt while outgoing volumes increased 31.3 percent to 625,000 tonnes.

“The increase in LNG was caused primarily by the higher gas prices in Europe, which led to more of this liquefied natural gas being transported to Europe,” the port said.

As recently reported by LNG Prime, Gate terminal, owned by Gasunie and Vopak, reached full sendout in January on the back of high demand and a surge in US LNG deliveries.

In total, Gate unloaded 113 ships in 2021, compared to 93 in the prior year. Including reloads, the facility handled 244 ships, up by 29 vessels when compared to 2020.

Gate received 51 LNG cargoes from terminals in the US last year. This compares to 26 shipments in 2020. LNG deliveries from Russia also increased from 38 cargoes in 2020 to 43 shipments last year.
