Hyundai Samho clinches new order to build three LNG-powered containerships

South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries has secured an order to build three new LNG-powered containerships, according to its parent Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.

KSOE said on Monday HSHI would deliver the 7,900 TEU LNG-powered containerships to an unidentified Asian shipowner by December 2024.

The contract has a price tag of about 427.1 billion won ($354.8 million).

KSOE did not reveal any additional information. In total, KSOE and its units won orders for 39 ships worth about $4.67 billion.

The shipbuilder has set a target for this year of $17.4 billion, compared to $14.9 billion last year. It secured in total $22.8 billion worth of orders during 2021.

Eastern Pacific Shipping and Zim behind the order?

One shipbuilding source told LNG Prime that Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping and Israel’s ZIM could be behind this order.

The duo signed a deal in January for three 7,900 TEU LNG-powered containerships and this new deal could be an option from that contract, the source said.

Announcing this deal in January, KSOE said Hyundai Samho would build three LNG-powered containerships for an Asian shipowner and deliver them by June 2024.

The first deal was worth about 418.6 billion won ($351 million).

These LNG-powered containerships will feature 6000 cbm LNG fuel tanks with GTT’s Mark III Flex membrane containment technology.
