Baker Hughes bags Plaquemines LNG gig

US energy services firm Baker Hughes has won a contract from compatriot Venture Global LNG to supply a liquefaction train system for the first phase of the Plaquemines LNG export project in Louisiana.

Venture Global LNG awarded the contract and granted notice to proceed to Baker Hughes for the project’s first phase which includes a capacity of 10 mtpa.

Baker Hughes said in a statement the “highly-efficient” modularized liquefaction train system helps to lower construction but also operational costs with a “plug and play” approach that enables faster installation.

Also, this liquefaction system includes 24 modularized compression trains.

The company manufactures, tests and transports the pre-assembled and fully integrated modular turbomachinery units for Venture Global at its manufacturing and assembly facilities in Italy.

As part of the scope, Baker Hughes will also provide field services to assist in commissioning of the supplied equipment.

Baker Hughes said this new order builds on an award in the fourth quarter of 2021 to provide power generation and electrical distribution equipment for the comprehensive power island system of Venture Global LNG’s Plaquemines LNG project.

It did not provide the price tag of the deal.

The firm expects first equipment deliveries for the Plaquemines LNG project to begin in the first half of 2023.

Venture Global recently said that Plaquemines LNG would start production in 2024 but the company has not yet announced a final investment decision on the development.

Baker Hughes already completed Calcasieu Pass work

The Plaquemines LNG project order follows a similar contract for a comprehensive LNG technology solution supplied by Baker Hughes for Venture Global’s Calcasieu Pass LNG terminal in 2019, also in Louisiana.

In 2021, Baker Hughes completed delivery of the ninth and final block for Calcasieu Pass.

Calcasieu Pass holds the global record for the fastest construction of a large-scale greenfield LNG project, moving from FID to first LNG in 29 months, according to Venture Global.

The firm already shipped two LNG cargoes from the facility.

Once completed, Calcasieu Pass will produce about 10 mtpa of LNG from 18 modular units configured in 9 blocks. The plant is the seventh large LNG export facility in the US.

Baker Hughes won both of these contracts under a master equipment supply agreement with Venture Global for 70 mtpa of production capacity as the latter plans to build four export plants.
