HHI’s floating LNG power solution gets BV approval

South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured approval in principle from Bureau Veritas for its barge-based floating LNG to power solution.

The solution named Hi-FL2P is an ‘all-in-one type’ LNG power plant. It features all equipment and systems required for the power generation and transmission, according to a joint statement.

The solution includes LNG containment, gas supply system, and a power plant installed in one floating unit.

Hyundai Heavy and BV worked on this development as part of a joint project which was formally completed with the certificate award.

HHI now expects to see an increasing number of orders for the solution. The yard points out that the unit provides a “significantly lower” capex than land-based infrastructure and is much faster to build, the statement said.

Dual-fuel power plant

The solution is 164 meters long, 48 meters wide, and features three LNG storage tanks with total capacity 81,000 cubic meters. It would also have 2,200-cbm marine gas oil tanks.

The unit generates power for its operation as well as for supplying to the land without a external fuel supply facility such as FSRU.

Powered by dual-fueled propulsion, the unit would use natural gas as main fuel but also marine oil, the statement said.
