McDermott completes Bayu-Undan subsea work

Houston-based McDermott recently completed work for the Santos-operated Bayu-Undan project in the Timor Sea.

Australian LNG player awarded this job to McDermott last year, the latter’s first subsea, engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) contract with Santos.

The Bayu-Undan infill well Phase 3C project in the Timor Sea is located about 500 kilometers off the northwest coast of Darwin, Australia, and 200 kilometers off the southeast coast of Timor-Leste.

McDermott said in a statement on Thursday it had started work in May 2021 and completed it in December the same year.

Moreover, the company’s scope involved a tieback of a single in-field well to existing facilities, re-using existing flexible flowline, with a new umbilical and certain infrastructure.

According to McDermott, a key to the execution was recovery of existing flexible flowlines, flushing to clear hydrocarbons, re-laying and a tieback from a new in-field well to the existing Bayu-Undan facility.

To remind, Santos and partners launched a $235 million infill drilling campaign at the Bayu-Undan field in May last year in order to extend the life of the field and to boost natural gas supplies for the Darwin LNG export plant.

The start of the Phase 3C drilling program followed a final investment decision in January.
