Shell starts using new Sovcomflot LNG carrier

Russia’s shipping group Sovcomflot has delivered a newbuild LNG carrier to a unit of energy giant Shell as part of a long-term charter deal.

South Korea’s Hyundai Samho handed out the 174,000-cbm SCF Barents to Sovcomflot on Monday.

The following day, the vessel embarked upon her maiden voyage under the charter deal with Shell, the Russian firm said.

The vessel, named after Dutch navigator and explorer Willem Barents, is the second in a series of three Atlanticmax carriers.

To remind, Sovcomflot placed the order in 2018 followed by the delivery of the first ship, SCF La Perouse, this February.

Each LNG carrier features GTT’s Mark III Flex cargo containment system and WinGD slow-speed dual-fuel X-DF engine.

In addition, the vessels have a boil-off gas partial re-liquefaction system, which “significantly” reduces cargo losses while on long voyages or awaiting cargo operations.

With the delivery of SCF Barents, Sovcomflot now has 15 LNG carriers in operation, with another 16 under construction.
