Equinor to restart Hammerfest LNG next week

Norwegian energy giant Equinor plans to bring back online its Hammerfest LNG plant on September 23 following a gas leak.

The LNG operator first closed the export facility due to an outage, for which the firm did not provide any additional info, and planned to restart the plant on Sunday.

However, following the leak, Equinor decided to postpone the restart for additional ten days.

“The alarm was sounded during preparations to restart the plant, and emergency services were notified,” a spokesman for Equinor said.

The spokesman added that the situation is “under control”.

The terminal liquefies natural gas from the Snohvit (Snow White) field in the Barents Sea.

Natural gas from Snohvit reaches the 4.5 mtpa LNG plant via a 160-kilometer gas pipeline which became operational in the autumn of 2007.

The chilled fuel produced at the facility mainly lands at LNG terminals in Europe but also in Asia.

Equinor is the operator of both the Snohvit field and Hammerfest LNG with a 36.8 percent stake.
