Electrolux picks CMA CGM’s LNG solution

Swedish home appliance maker Electrolux said it has signed a shipping deal with French giant CMA CGM for the latter’s LNG-powered containerships.

Electrolux said in a statement would use CMA CGM’s “Cleaner Energy LNG solution” based on LNG and guarantee of origin biomethane, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent compared with bunker fuel.

Besides partnering with CMA CGM, Electrolux also signed a deal with Denmark’s Maersk which involves using a second-generation biofuel that is a blend of used cooking oil and standard fuel.

Under these deals, the two firms would each transport 40,000 twenty-foot equivalent containers (TEU) as Electrolux looks to slash its shipping emissions.

“By promoting more sustainable shipping practices, we demonstrate that we are serious about reducing our carbon footprint and working together across industries to drive the market for low-emission fuels,” Vanessa Butani, Electrolux VP sustainability, said.

CMA CGM is heavily investing in LNG-powered containerships.

The group’s fleet currently consists of 26 LNG-powered vessels. This fleet will grow to at least 44 vessels by the end of 2024.
