Germany’s NSB develops new LNG-powered feeder containership design

Germany’s NSB Group has developed a new LNG-powered feeder containership concept as part of plans to slash emissions.

The vessel manager, owned by Helmut Ponath’s Buxriver, said in a statement it has developed an LNG-powered 2,500 TEU design with 312 FEU reefer capacity.

According to NSB, the vessels would slash carbon emission by 20 percent when using LNG as primary fuel.

Last year, NSB revealed an LNG-powered 3,500 TEU containership design with an increased reefer container intake of about 940 FEU.

“We are still convinced of our previous 3,500 TEU Eco Reefer design and therefore we have also adapted this 2,500 Eco Feeder with its deckhouse on the forecastle deck, optimizing its container capacity and separating the accommodation from the IMO Type C LNG tanks,” NSB said.

Under full reefer load of 312 FEU, the vessels has an LNG cruising range of up 6,700nm. This is the same range when the vessels uses MGO as a backup fuel in case of LNG shortage, NSB said.

The new design features improved consumption and reduced emissions, including power take off, waste heat recovery and advanced battery systems for peak shaving, combined with a shore power connection, NSB added.

According to its website, NSB currently manages a fleet of 71 vessels. These include containerships, tankers, but also bulkers and jack-ups.
