Keppel working on El Salvador FSRU conversion

Keppel’s Singapore shipyard is converting a 2002-built LNG carrier to a FSRU bound for the Port of Acajutla in El Salvador.

Keppel Offshore & Marine said on Tuesday the firm inked the contract with FSRU Development, a joint venture between BW’s LNG unit and US-based Invenergy.

The company also won a deal to build a dredger for Manson Construction and the two contracts have a combined value of S$200 million (US$147m).

This represents Keppel’s fifth FSRU conversion following the first back in 2008.

Furthermore, the new FSRU will form part of El Salvador’s first LNG-to-power project being developed by Inverengy’s Energía del Pacífico.

BW LNG secured Shell’s old 135,000-cbm LNG carrier Gallina to convert it to a FSRU and provide it to the integrated project that includes a 378-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant.

The vessel renamed to BW Tatiana has been located at the Keppel yard since June, according to its AIS data.

Worth mentioning here, China’s COSCO yard started working on the FSRUs Wartsila module in May this year.

Additionally, Shell will supply LNG to the project as part of a long-term deal signed with Energía del Pacífico.

The LNG-to-power project will be able to meet around 30 percent of El Salvador’s energy demand. It should be operational by the end of 2021.
