CNOOC: world’s largest LNG storage tanks taking shape

China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC) continues to make progress on six giant LNG storage tanks at its Binhai LNG import terminal in Jiangsu.

CNOOC’s gas and power unit said in a statement that it has completed concrete pouring on the first layer of the outer tank walls.

This follows concrete pouring on six 100.6 meters long foundations for the world’s largest LNG storage tanks.

Once complete in 2023, the height of the outer tank wall for each of the six tanks would reach about 50.8 meters, according to CNOOC.

Each of the tanks will have a capacity of 270,000 cbm and will add to the already four existing tanks with a capacity of 220,000 cbm located in Yancheng Binhai Port Industrial Park.

CNOOC independently developed and designed the ultra-large tanks.

Following completion of this expansion phase, the company said the Binhai receiving terminal would have an annual LNG processing capacity of 6 million tons per year, and would become one of the largest LNG storage bases in China.

CNOOC is also planning a second stage of expansion to build ten more 270,000-cbm LNG storage tanks, it previously said.
