Samsung Heavy nets single LNG carrier order

South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries said it would build one liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier under a new deal revealed on Friday.

According to Samsung Heavy, the contract has a price tag of 263.3 billion won ($217 million).

Also, the yard said it would build the LNG carrier for an owner based in Oceania and deliver it by October 2025.

Samsung Heavy did not provide any additional information.

Two shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that the owner behind this order is Denmark’s Celsius Shipping, boosting the orderbook to nine 180,000-cbm vessels at the Korean yard.

In December, Celsius Tankers, a unit of Celsius Shipping, and partners ordered two vessels at Samsung Heavy.

Samsung Heavy already delivered four 180,000-cbm LNG tankers to Celsius Shipping.

Including this newest LNG carrier, Samsung Heavy secured orders for 14 ships worth about $2.2 billion this year. It previously won orders for four LNG carriers and nine containerships.

The yard has set an order target of $8.8 billion this year.

In 2021, Samsung won orders worth $12.2 billion, surpassing its annual target of $9.1 billion by about $3.1 billion. This included orders for 22 LNG carriers.

(Article updated on March 6, 2022, to say that the owner behind the order is Denmark’s Celsius Shipping.)
