South Korea’s HJSC develops LNG-powered containership

South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) said it has won basic approval from classification society Lloyd’s Register for a new LNG-powered container vessel.

The shipbuilder, previously known as Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction, said in a statement on Thursday it obtained the approval in principle for a 7,700-teu LNG dual-fuel containership.

This approval follows a memorandum of understanding HJSC and LR signed in November last year.

HJSC designed the LNG-fueled vessel, while LR reviewed and approved the design.

According to HJSC, the vessel has a length of 272 meters and a cruise speed of 22 knots.

Also, the LNG tank with a 6,000 cbm capacity features GTT’s Mark III membrane system, it said.

With this design approval, HJSC said it has secured technology for building a “high-efficient” vessel capable of meeting international environmental standards as well as the various needs of shipowners.

Orders for LNG-powered containerships keep growing as owners look to meet IMO rules and with this new design HJSC is looking to respond to market demand for such vessels, it added.
