DSME bags order for two LNG carriers

South Korea’s shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering has received an order for two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.

DSME revealed this order in a statement released on Monday saying it would build the 174,000-cbm LNG carriers for an unidentified owner in Oceania and deliver them in the second half of 2026.

Two shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime on Tuesday that Japan’s MOL could be behind this order, but we could not very this by the time this article was published.

The contract has a price tag of 526.3 billion won ($428 million), DSME said.

According to DSME, the LNG carriers would feature MAN’s ME-GA dual-fuel engine and a reliquefaction system.

With this order, DSME won in total 12 orders for LNG carriers this year.

This year, the shipbuilder said it expects to surpass the record fifteen LNG carriers it won in 2021.

The LNG carrier orders in the January-April period include four vessels for Greece’s Maran Gas, two for BW LNG, one to MOL, and the three vessels linked to Venture Global LNG.

DSME secured orders worth about $4.61 billion for 20 ships this year, including six LNG-powered containerships.

It has now achieved about 51.8 percent of its annual target of $8.9 billion.

Last year, the yard won about $10.8 billion in orders, exceeding its target of $7.7 billion.
