Europe’s 1st inland LNG bunkering ship in milestone operation

The LNG London inland bunkering vessel, owned by a venture of Belgium’s Victrol and French Sogestran, has completed its first ship-to-ship fueling operation in the Dutch port of Rotterdam.

The 3,000-cbm Shell-chartered vessel, said to be Europe’s first inland LNG bunkering ship, completed the milestone operation on October 1, Victrol said without providing any additional details.

Howevher, the cruise vessel in question is probably the LNG-powered Iiona, owned by Carnival Corporation’s P&O Cruises.

The Iona, claimed to be first British cruise ship to run on LNG, is undergoing trials. The vessel is under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Bremerhaven and previously visited Rotterdam for inspection works.

More than 200 LNG bunkering operations

The LNG London completed its first bunkering operation in June last year supplying the fuel to Containerships LNG-powered vessels in Rotterdam.

Since then, it completed more than 200 bunkering operations, according to Victrol.

The vessel loads LNG at the Gate terminal in Rotterdam and delivers it to seagoing vessels, inland barges and onshore terminals, while a restricted draft allows it to sail via inland waterways to Antwerp and Amsterdam, if required.
