MAN Cryo clinches contract for LNG-powered PCTC duo

MAN Cryo, a unit of Germany’s MAN Energy Solutions, has signed a deal with Chinese yard CIMC Raffles in Yantai to deliver its fuel gas supply systems for two LNG-powered PCTCs.

Swedish shipping company Wallenius Marine ordered these vessels in July this year.

Following delivery at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024, both of the dual-fuel ships with a capacity of about 6,500 units will go on charter to German giant Volkswagen Group.

MAN Cryo said in a statement on Monday the scope of the new contract for each vessel includes port- and starboard-side bunkering stations, LNG storage tank with a volume of 2,300 cbm, and tank connection space with low-pressure vaporizer, BOG heater and two LNG pumps.

In addition, MAN Cryo will provide high-pressure gas handling equipment for delivery of gas to MAN ME-GI two-stroke main engine, BOG management system with one high-pressure compressor, control system, as well as gas detection system.

MAN Cryo said it would deliver the equipment in 2023, but it did not provide the price tag of the deal.

Henrik Malm, managing director at MAN Energy Solutions, Sweden and Finland, said in the statement this represents “yet another world-first” for MAN Cryo where the boil-off gas would go to the low methane slip ME-GI via a high-pressure, boil-off gas compressor.

“Due to the installed shaft generator, this further reduces the running hours on the auxiliary engines,” Malm said.
