DEME’s dredger Spartacus gets LNG fuel for first time

DEME’s cutter suction dredger Spartacus has received LNG fuel for the first time near Rotterdam in the Netherlands.

The ship’s builder IHC teamed up with Dutch Titan LNG to perform the bunkering operation during the weekend, according to Belgium’s DEME.

The 164 meters long vessel is claimed to be world’s first and the most powerful LNG-powered cutter suction dredger.

With dual fuel engines and installed capacity of 44,180 kW, Spartacus is able to cut harder soils at speeds that have not been possible before, according to DEME.

Furthermore, the firm says the vessel will be able to dredge in waters up to 45 meters.

DEME previously expected to take delivery of the vessel last year but this was postponed due to financial problems at IHC.

Besides this dredger, DEME has been heavily investing over the last years in LNG as fuel for its fleet as it looks to slash emissions and costs.
