GE secures turbine order for Vietnam’s LNG power plant

GE said it has secured an order from South Korea’s Samsung C&T to provide equipment for PetroVietnam Power’s two LNG-fueled plants in the Nhon Trach district.

Samsung C&T and Vietnamese contractor Lilama have earlier this year won a contract from PetroVietnam Power, a unit of PetroVietnam, to build the the Nhon Trach 3 and 4 combined cycle power plant plants located some 70 kilometers southeast of Ho Chi Minh City.

The plants will get regasified LNG from the PetroVietnam Gas-operated Thi Vai terminal, the country’s first such facility.

Samsung C&T is also building this regasification terminal which should import its first cargo in the fourth quarter of this year as Vietnam looks to meet the country’s growing power demand.

GE said in a statement on Monday this new power plant project marks the company’s first H-Class gas turbine order in Vietnam.

For the Nhon Trach expansion, GE will provide two blocks of more than 800 megawatts (MW) each including a GE 9HA.02 gas turbine, the company’s most efficient 50 Hz gas turbine, an STF-D650 steam turbine, and a W88 generator.

Once in commercial operation in 2025, GE expects Nhon Trach 3 & 4 to deliver over 1.6 gigawatt (GW) of electricity.

The US firm did not reveal the price tag of the contract.

In addition to this deal, GE and PV Power signed a memorandum of understanding on May 11 to improve the existing Nhon Trach 1 power plant.

The two firms also agreed to develop long-term cooperation on the maintenance for Nhon Trach 3 & 4, GE said.
