Seaspan inks deals for four LNG-powered containerships

Seaspan, a unit of Atlas Corp, said it has signed charter and shipbuilding deals for four LNG-powered containerships.

The firm said on Wednesday it ordered the 7,700-teu ships from a “major shipyard” and signed chartering deals with a “leading global liner customer”.

According to Seaspan, the vessel will be delivered in the third and fourth quarters of 2024.

The charters include purchase obligations at the conclusion of the charter terms, and would contribute about $0.95 billion of gross contracted cash flow, it said.

Also, Seaspan plans to financed the newbuild through existing liquidity, cash flow from operations, and additional borrowings.

The transaction remains subject to certain closing conditions, the firm said.

Seaspan did not provide any additional information.

Brokers and shipbuilding sources recently said that Seaspan had ordered eight 8,000-teu LNG-powered containerships at South Korea’s K Shipbuilding. These vessels will serve Switzerland-based shipping giant MSC under a long-term charter deal.

Last year, Seaspan and Israel’s ZIM signed a charter deal for ten 15,000 TEU vessels that will serve the latter’s Asia-US East Coast trade.

Seaspan placed the order for these dual-fuel ships at South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries.

After this agreement, Seaspan and ZIM also signed charter deals for 15 7,000 TEU LNG-powered container vessels. China’s Jiangsu New Yangzi will build these ships.
