CMA CGM’s Containerships switches half of Finnish truck fleet to bio-LNG

Hamburg-based Containerships, a unit of France’s CMA CGM, is now fueling half of its fleet of trucks in Finland with bio-LNG, as part of plans to further slash emissions.

Containerships said in a social media post last week that 50 percent of the company’s current operating trucking fleet in Finland is already powered by LNG.

The firm did not reveal the number of trucks it operates in Finland. According to its website, the firm has a total of 22 trucks in the country out of which eleven are Volvo LNG trucks.

“We made the switch and now operate all of our LNG trucks on bio-LNG,” it said in the post.

With this decision, Containerships has reduced the fleets greenhouse gas emissions “significantly”.

Liquefied biogas or bio-LNG allows roughly a 90 percent reduction in GHG emissions in road transport versus diesel, Containerships said.

The company’s parent CMA CGM is heavily investing in LNG as fuel and expects to have at least 44 LNG-powered ships in its fleet by 2024.

This includes investments in bio-LNG. In December last year, CMA CGM and LNG giant Shell have completed the first bio-LNG ship-to-ship bunkering operation in Rotterdam.

Shell-chartered LNG London bunkered the Containerships Aurora, a 1,400 TEU LNG-powered vessel, with a nearly 10 percent blend of low carbon bio-LNG.

Containerships owns the vessel along with six other small LNG-powered container vessels.
