South Korea’s Samsung Heavy tests new reliquefaction tech

South Korea’s Samsung Heavy said it has succeeded in verifying the performance of its new reliquefaction system, X-Reli, boosting its competitiveness in the LNG carrier shipbuilding industry.

The yard said in a statement it held a demonstration of the technology on June 2 at its LNG pilot test facility located within the Geoje shipyard.

In order to win shipowners’ confidence in the system, SHI built a real-scale system at the test facility. This follows a detailed design approval for the tech from ABS in 2020.

According to the shipbuilder, the event held last week gathered officials from shipping firms MISC and Minerva, as well as officials from classification societies ABS and KR.

The system, independently developed by SHI for low-pressure X-DF engines, reliquefies boil-off gas without additional refrigerants and returns it as LNG to tanks.

Reliquefaction of boil-off gas offers owners and operators increased flexibility and the potential to maximize cargo delivery.

Samsung Heavy, that secured orders for 22 LNG carriers in 2021 and for 10 LNG tankers this year, expects this tech to further boost its position in the LNG shipbuidling sector.

Last year, the shipbuilder also held a demonstration test for tis new FLNG liquefaction tech, Sense IV.
