Wartsila to equip Eastern Pacific Shipping’s LNG PCTCs

Finland’s Wartsila has won a contract to supply its hybrid propulsion system for eleven new LNG dual-fuel pure car and truck carriers ordered by Idan Ofer’s Eastern Pacific Shipping in China.

Wartsila said in a statement on Tuesday that China’s Jinling and Weihai shipyards are building these vessels for EPS.

Earlier this year, EPS ordered two more LNG dual-fuel PCTCs at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Weihai. It booked four at the China Merchants yard in Nanjing last year.

According to its website, EPS will take delivery of most of these 200 meters long newbuilds with a capacity of about 7,050 units in 2024.

Wartsila said the deliveries of these newbuilds would start in 2024.

The firm said the scope of supply of its hybrid propulsion system includes in-line shaft generators, converters, an energy storage system, and the company’s energy management system for controlling the hybrid operations.

According to Wartsila, the hybrid solution would help optimize fuel efficiency and minimize emissions.

Furthermore, the system “effectively provides future-proofing for the vessels since it has the built-in flexibility to adapt to future technology shifts,” it said.

These may come in the form of alternative fuels, greater battery capacity, solar panels or fuel cell operation, all of which can easily be integrated into the Wartsila system, the firm said.
