Golar confirms Methane Princess pirate attack, one seafarer abducted

A unit of Norway-based shipping firm Golar LNG has confirmed a pirate attack on the Methane Princess in Equatorial Guinea. One seafarer is still being held by pirates.

To remind, Dryad said this week the 2003-built 138,000-cbm vessel owned by Golar LNG Partners was boarded on October 17.

The pirates kidnapped two Filipino nationals working on the jetty but one seafarer managed to escape.

Pirates boarded the Shell-chartered LNG carrier whilst at anchor off Malabo. The incident occurred shortly after the vessel completed loading operations at the Punta Europa LNG terminal.

“Golar Management is in touch with the seafarer’s family and has assured the family that every effort is being made to secure his safe and timely release,” the firm said in a statement.

Golar said it would not provide any further information as this “might prejudice the safety of the seafarer or prolong his captivity.”

Following an investigation into the attack by the local authorities, the LNG vessel departed for its next port of call.
