South Korea’s Hyundai Global Service and France-based Cryostar are joining forces to provide a turnkey solution to retrofit LNG carriers and FSRUs with systems and equipment to reduce CO2 emissions.
In that regard, the two firms recently signed a memorandum of understanding for the strategic partnership to help shipowners improve efficiency and compliance of their vessels.
According to HGS, part of the Hyundai Heavy Industries family, the solution includes installing subcoolers called “EcoChill“ and combining them with other technologies.
These include engine power limitation (EPL) or shaft power limitation (Shapoli) packages and energy saving devices.
Reducing speed
In order to reduce CO2 emissions and comply with EEXI and CII environmental regulations, owners need to adapt their vessels and one of the solutions includes reducing the speed of the ship.
However, this results in the vessel treating larger volumes of boil-off gas.
Installing these subcoolers helps cool LNG in the tank and “significantly” reduces boil-off to avoid use of the GCU and associated emissions, Cryostar, part of Linde, said in a separate statement.
Subcoolers can be fitted without disturbing existing fuel gas supply systems, and require minimal interfaces on board, it said.
“HGS and Cryostar are confident that their combined expertise will provide safe, simple and economical solutions for vessel upgrades to meet the current and future environmental and operational challenges facing some of the existing LNG fleet,” the firm said.
