Hudong-Zhonghua starts work on CMA CGM’s LNG-powered containership

Chinese shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua has kicked off construction on the second out of six LNG-powered containerships for French shipping group CMA CGM.

To mark the construction start, the CSSC-owned yard held a steel-cutting ceremony on July 15 for the LNG-fueled 13,000-teu containership with a working name H1840A, it said in a statement.

Hudong-Zhonghua and Jiangnan Shipyard are each building six LNG-powered ships for CMA CGM under a deal revealed in April last year.

The six vessels at Jiangnan have a capacity of 15,000 units.

Moreover, the new LNG-powered vessels will feature GTT’s Mark III containment system and WinGD’s dual-fuel propulsion, such as the nine LNG-powered ULCVs already built at the two yards.

The vessel’s LNG tanks will have a capacity of 14,000 cbm.

CMA CGM is heavily investing in LNG as fuel and recently revealed orders for ten new LNG dual-fuel containerships and six methanol-fueled vessels, bringing its orderbook to 69 ships.
