Japan’s Inpex invests in ammonia tech startup

Japan’s LNG player Inpex said it has invested in Tokyo-based Tsubame BHB, a startup that develops new ammonia synthesis technology.

Inpex expects this new ammonia synthesis technology to reduce power consumption and improve safety by enabling ammonia synthesis at lower temperatures and lower pressures compared to conventional technologies, and contribute to decarbonization through “clean ammonia” production.

The operator of the Ichthys LNG export project in Australia said in a statement it would assist Tsubame BHB in commercializing its small-scale, on-site ammonia production with a view to realize large-scale, low-cost operations in the future and provide a stable supply of “clean energy”.

Inpex did not reveal further information regarding the deal.

The Japanese firm is looking to develop its hydrogen business as part of its long-term plans to slash emissions and become a net zero business.

Also, Inpex plans to commercialize three or more projects by around 2030 while aiming to produce and supply 100 thousand tons or more of hydrogen/ammonia per year.

It is also looking to slash emissions from its Ichthys LNG project and has recently signed a deal with the government of Australia’s Northern Territory to create a multi-user carbon capture and storage hub.
