NYK takes delivery of Japan’s first LNG PCTC

Japan’s shipping giant NYK Line has taken delivery of Sakura Leader, the country’s first large LNG-fueled pure truck and car carrier.

The 200 meters long vessel will be able to transport about 7,000 standard vehicle equivalent units per voyage.

NYK ordered the vessel backed by the Japan’s environment and tourism ministries at Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding in September 2019.

Following the first vessel, the Japanese shipping giant placed another order at the same yard in February this year.

The shipping group expects to take delivery of the second sister vessel in 2022.

NYK has been investing heavily in LNG-powered vessels over the years as it looks to cut emissions and comply with more stringent IMO rules.

In addition to these PCTCs, the firm plans to welcome an LNG-fueled coal carrier to its fleet in 2023.
