Bilfinger nets contract to build bio-LNG plant in Germany

Germany-based industrial services provider Bilfinger said it has secured a contract from compatriot REEFUELERY to build the latter’s planned bio-LNG production plant near the German city of Fulda.

Bilfinger said in a statement the bio-LNG plant would produce up to 180 tons of bio-LNG per day from biomethane derived from municipal and agricultural residues.

REEFUELERY chose the location near Fulda due to its direct access to the MIDAL gas pipeline.

The bio-LNG will be used as an alternative fuel for freight and heavy-duty transportation to reduce CO2 emissions.

According to Bilfinger, the plant can provide fuel for up to 4,500 heavy-duty vehicles.

This saves a total of up to 550,000 tons of CO2 per year compared with diesel fuel, it said.

The plant will have components for cleaning and liquefying the gas, pumps, storage tanks, and devices for refueling the tanker trucks.

Bilfinger will provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the refueling facility as well as piping construction expertise.

The firm did not reveal the price tag of the deal.

Bilfigner expects the bio-LNG plant to go online in the first quarter of 2024.

Earlier this year, Finland’s Wartsila said it would supply equipment for the bio-LNG production plant with a capacity of 63,000 tons per year.

Wartsila said it won the contract in March from REEFUELERY, a joint venture of Erdgas Südwest and avanca, a company focused on sustainable energy and logistics solutions.

The plant would deliver the fuel to Alternoil’s network of filling stations for trucks, owned by the avanca group, according to Wartsila.

Alternoil has a large network of LNG filling stations in Germany.
