Spanish LNG imports rise in August

Spanish LNG imports rose 12.1 percent in August when compared to the same month last year, according to data by the country’s LNG terminal operator, Enagas.

LNG imports totaled about 24 TWh in August. Including pipeline imports from Algeria and France, gas imports reached about 38 TWh last month, up from 36.8 TWh in August last year, Enagas said in its monthly report.

Gas demand rose on the back of higher demand for power generation. Demand for power generation rose 97.6 percent to 16.6 TWh in August while conventional demand dropped 37.5 percent to 11.7 TWh, Enagas said.

Enagas operates a large network of gas pipelines and has four LNG import plants in Barcelona, Huelva, Cartagena, and Gijon. It also owns 50 percent of the BBG regasification plant in Bilbao and 72.5 percent of the Sagunto plant.

The firm is working to launch its El Musel LNG facility in Gijon with the capacity to unload and load 100 carriers per year.

Spanish LNG regasification terminals unloaded 25 cargoes last month, the same as in August 2021, according to Enagas.

US remains the biggest supplier of LNG to Spain with 10 TWh or about 26.5 percent of the total imports in August.

Volumes from Nigeria and Russia reached 5.8 TWh and 4.5 TWh, respectfully. Nigeria volumes dropped from 6 TWh in August last year while Russian volumes doubled from 2.2 TWh last year.

Other LNG sources in August include Qatar and re-exports from Belgium.

Spanish LNG terminals loaded about 4.6 TWh in August, down 15 percent when compared to the last year, while the number of truck loads dropped 37.5 percent to 734, the data shows.
