Hyundai Mipo to build four LNG-powered containerships

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Mipo has secured orders for eight vessels, including four small LNG-powered containerships.

Hyundai Mipo’s parent Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering said in a statement that these orders have a price tag of 525 billion won ($377 million).

According to KSOE, Hyundai Mipo won the orders from two African shipping firms.

The shipbuilder will build four 1,400 TEU LNG dual-fuel containerships and the contract includes options for two additional ships.

KSOE said the containerships would be 170 meters long, 27.6 meters wide, and 15 meters high.

Hyundai Mipo would deliver these vessels in stages starting in the first half of 2025, it said.

In addition to the containerships, Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding, a unit of Hyundai Mipo, will build four chemical/product tankers and deliver them by the second half of 2025.

KSOE did not reveal the name of the owners behind the orders.

Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping said in a statement later on Monday it had ordered these four LNG-powered containerships.

Following delivery in 2025, the vessels will go on charter to US shipping and logistics company Crowley.
