DSME, ABS to work on slashing LNG carrier emissions

Classification society ABS is joining forces with South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering to create a decarbonization strategy for the latter’s LNG carrier designs.

In that regard, the two firms have signed deal to work on a joint development project (JDP) during the recently held Gastech Exhibition and Conference in Milan, Italy.

According to a statement by ABS, the project would see the partners investigate carbon emission performance of ships in various segments.

Specialists from ABS’ simulation center in Singapore will then simulate the performance of a range of decarbonization technologies.

ABS said the outcomes of the JDP would allow DSME to compare and select the best decarbonization options for each specific ship segment.

DSME, which is being acquired by South Korea’s Hanwha Group, secured contracts worth about $8.6 billion for 38 ships this year, including six LNG-powered containerships and 30 LNG tankers.

Last week, the shipbuilder also terminated a contract for two LNG carriers it won in July this year.
