Hudong-Zhonghua kicks of work on LNG carrier, LNG-powered containership

Chinese shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua has started building one 174,000-cbm LNG carrier, part of the PetroChina project, and a 13,000-teu LNG-powered containership for France’s CMA CGM.

The CSSC-controlled yard held a steel-cutting ceremony on Friday for the LNG carrier with a working name H1835A, it said in a statement.

This is the fifth out of six LNG carriers Hudong-Zhonghua is building for compatriot Cosco Shipping Energy Transportation and CNPC’s unit PetroChina.

The shipbuilder plans to deliver the first LNG carrier in this batch, Shaolin, this month, while the second vessel, Wu Dang, has completed its sea trials.

All of the vessels will feature WinGD X-DF dual-fuel engines and GTT’s NO96 L03+ containment system.

CMA CGM’s LNG-fueled containership

Besides the LNG carrier, Hudong-Zhonghua also held a steel-cutting ceremony for CMA CGM’s LNG-powered containership with a working name H1841A.

This is the third out of six LNG-powered containerships with a capacity of 13,000 units.

Hudong-Zhonghua and Jiangnan Shipyard are each building six LNG-powered ships for CMA CGM under a deal revealed in April last year.

The six vessels at Jiangnan have a capacity of 15,000 units.

Moreover, the new LNG-powered vessels will feature GTT’s Mark III containment system and WinGD’s dual-fuel propulsion, such as the nine LNG-powered ULCVs already built at the two yards.

The vessel’s LNG tanks will have a capacity of 14,000 cbm.
