MOL pens another LNG carrier charter deal

Japan’s shipping firm MOL has revealed another charter contract for a newbuild LNG carrier following a recent deal with a unit of French energy giant TotalEnergies.

MOL said in a statement on Friday it signed a multi-year contract during the third quarter to charter one 174,000-cbm LNG carrier to an “energy major”.

The Japanese firm did not provide any additional information regarding the charterer or the contract.

South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) would build this vessel and deliver it in 2026 to augment the charterer’s LNG fleet, MOL said.

The 294.9 meters long vessel would feature MAN ME-GA engine which provides lower emissions compared to previous generation vessels, MOL said.

ME-GA engine is equipped with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system that reduces methane slip while improving overall fuel consumption, it said.

Furthermore, the vessel would feature additional functions such as air lubrication system and shaft generator, which together reduce CO2 emissions from the vessel during operation, MOL said.

Shipbuilding sources previously said that MOL was behind a single LNG carrier at DSME in August, and for two LNG carriers in April.

The Japanese firm currently has at least twelve LNG carriers on order at DSME scheduled for delivery between 2023 and 2026, according to VesselsValue.
