DSME to build one LNG carrier for about $249 million

South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering said it would build one liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier worth about $249 million under a new contract revealed on Monday.

DSME said it would construct the LNG carrier for an unidentified owner in Oceania and deliver the vessel by December 2026.

Moreover, the contract has a price tag of 354.2 billion won or about $249 million.

The price is one of the highest-ever paid for a single LNG carrier with a capacity of 174,000 cbm or more.

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that Maria Angelicoussis-led Maran Gas has booked the LNG carrier at DSME.

Including this vessel, Maran Gas ordered in total nine LNG carriers since November last year with DSME following contracts in November, in January, in February, and in June.

Prior to this order for the single carrier, DSME received an order for an LNG carrier duo worth about $500 million or $250 million per ship.

These vessels are tied to US LNG exporter Venture Global LNG.

With this newest contract, DSME won orders worth about $10.1 billion.

It previously exceeded its target of $8.9 billion with the big part of LNG carrier orders tied to the massive QatarEnergy program.

The shipbuilder, which is being acquired by South Korea’s Hanwha Group, won orders for six LNG-powered containerships and 37 LNG tankers this year.
