Hudong-Zhonghua kicks off work on CMA CGM’s LNG-fueled containership

Chinese shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua has kicked off construction on the fourth out of six LNG-powered 13,000-teu containerships it is building for French shipping group CMA CGM.

Hudong-Zhonghua held a steel-cutting ceremony on December 9 for CMA CGM’s LNG-powered containership with a working name H1842A.

Besides this vessel, the Chinese shipbuilder said in a statement it hosted a keel-laying ceremony on December 12 for the first ship in this project with a working name 1839A.

Hudong-Zhonghua and Jiangnan Shipyard are each building six LNG-powered ships for CMA CGM under a deal revealed in April last year.

The six vessels at Jiangnan have a capacity of 15,000 units.

Moreover, the new LNG-powered vessels will feature GTT’s Mark III containment system and WinGD’s dual-fuel propulsion, such as the nine LNG-powered ULCVs already built at the two yards.

The vessel’s LNG tanks will have a capacity of 14,000 cbm.

Besides these vessels, CMA CGM recently ordered another four LNG-powered giants at Hudong-Zhonghua.

These 23,000-teu LNG dual-fuel containerships will be similar to those nine operational ULCVs.
