Anglo American charters LNG-powered quartet from U-Ming

Mining giant Anglo American signed a ten-year charter with Taiwan’s U-Ming Marine Transport for four LNG-powered capesize vessels, introducing chilled fuel into its chartered fleet for the first time.

China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao will build the quartet and deliver the vessels in 2023.

The 190,000 DWT dual-fuel dry bulk carriers will be about 299 meters long and 47.50 meters wide.

Furthermore, the vessels will feature MAN Energy Solutions’ high-pressure ME-GI engines.

These engines will help to further reduce their environmental footprint with “negligible levels” of methane slippage, according to U-Ming.

Anglo American will use the fleet to carry up to five million tonnes of product per year. The vessels will transport iron ore from Brazil and South Africa to the company’s global customer base.

Additionally, the vessels will help the mining firm to slash emissions as it looks to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2040.
