Anglo American loads its first chartered LNG-powered bulker in South Africa

Global miner Anglo American said that the company’s first chartered LNG-powered bulker, Ubuntu Harmony, had loaded its first cargo of iron ore in South Africa.

According to a statement by Anglo American issued on Thursday, the Capesize+ vessel took the cargo from the company’s Kumba operations.

China’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding delivered this 190,000-dwt LNG dual-fuel bulk carrier to Taiwan’s shipowner U-Ming and charterer Anglo American in December.

This is the first our four sister vessels and the Chinese yard hosted a naming ceremony for the third vessel in this batch, Ubuntu Integrity, earlier this month.

Anglo American has in total ten LNG dual-fueled newbuild ships that it expects to introduce to its chartered fleet during the course of 2023 and 2024.

The mining firm claims these vessels would deliver an estimated 35 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to ships fueled by conventional marine oil fuel.

Anglo American said the Ubuntu fleet is a key component of its ambition to achieve carbon-neutrality for its controlled ocean freight by 2040 – with an interim target to reduce emissions from these activities by 30% by 2030 – all part of Anglo American’s wider ambition to halve Scope 3 emissions by 2040.
