NYK’s LNG carrier to leave Suez Canal after it ran aground last week

NYK’s 2021-built LNG carrier Grace Emilia is expected to depart from the Suez Canal on Wednesday after it ran aground in the waterway last week, according to NYK.

An NYK spokeswoman previously told LNG Prime that the vessel grounded in the Suez Canal on February 1, but the incident did not affect the traffic in the giant waterway.

No pollution or injuries have been reported and the Suez Canal Authority sent three tugs to provide assistance to the 89,730-dwt vessel.

The LNG carrier was refloated later the same day and was moved to Great Bitte Lake.

NYK said there was no mechanical failure of the vessel.

Egypt’s Suez Canal Authority said last week that the vessel had suffered a malfunction of its rudder.

The 174,000-cbm Grace Emilia is currently anchored at Great Bitte Lake and has been given the all clear from relevant authorities, the NYK spokeswoman said.

Depending on weather conditions, NYK is expecting the vessel to depart to Malta on Wednesday for further detailed inspection to verify condition of the LNG carrier.

The vessel was still anchored at Great Bitte Lake on Wednesday morning, according to its AIS data provided by VesselsValue.

Back in December 2021, NYK signed a multi-year charter deal with India’s GAIL for this LNG carrier.

The LNG carrier features WinGD’s dual-fuel slow-speed engine that can operate on marine gas oil or boil-off gas stored in the cargo tank.
