Uniper’s Liqvis inks bio-LNG deal

Liqvis, a unit of Germany’s Uniper, has signed a deal with compatriot revis bioenergy to buy bio-LNG from the latter from mid-2023.

Uniper said in a statement that Liqvis plans to offer bio-LNG as an alternative fuel for heavy duty transport at its LNG filling stations in Germany from the summer of 2023 and to gradually convert its entire supply portfolio to 100 percent bio-LNG.

Uniper did not provide any additional details regarding the bio-LNG deal.

It said that the fuel would be produced in a revis biomethane liquefaction plant.

According to the statement, revis biomethane is building what it says is Europe’s largest plant for biomethane production from commercial fertilizers.

Also, the nordfuel plant is located at the C-Port on the coastal canal in the district of Cloppenburg and is expected to go online in mid-2023.

This is not the first bio-LNG deal for Liqvis as the firm previously joined forces with EnviTec Bioenergie Güstrow.

“Unfortunately, due to the high gas prices caused by geopolitical developments in recent months, LNG is no longer competitive as an alternative fuel for heavy duty transport when compared with conventional fuels,” Sebastian Gröblinghoff, managing director of Liqvis, said in the statement.

“Particularly our customers in the forwarding and logistics sector, who have relied on LNG-powered vehicles, have come under severe economic pressure,” he said.

Gröblinghoff added the bio-LNG deal with revis makes Liqvis less dependent on price developments on the European gas exchanges, while at the same time “enabling more sustainable competitiveness with diesel fuels.”
