India continues to boost LNG imports

India’s LNG imports continued to rise for the fourth straight month in October following declines in April-June due to Covid-19 restrictions.

LNG imports totaled 3.28 billion cubic meters or about 2.40 million tonnes of LNG in October, a rise of 16.1% year-on-year, data from the oil ministry’s Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell shows.

Additionally, the value of October LNG imports eased to $0.7 billion compared to $0.8 billion in the same month last year.

As per India’s domestic natural gas production, it dropped 8.4 percent during the month under review to 2.41 bcm.

In the April-October period, the country imported 19.07 bcm or about 14 million tonnes of LNG.

This represents a decline of just 0.9 percent compared to the same period last year despite the big drops in April-June.

India currently imports LNG via six terminals with a combined capacity of 42.5 million tonnes.

Petronet LNG’s 17.5 mtpa Dahej terminal operated at 92 percent capacity while Shell’s 5 mtpa Hazira terminal operated at 96.5 percent capacity in April-September, the PPAC data shows.
