JGC to build LNG power plant for Sumitomo Chemical

Japan’s JGC Corp has won a contract from compatriot Sumitomo Chemical to build an LNG-fueled power generation facility in Chiba.

JGC Japan received an order for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning work for the facility that Sumitomo Chemical is planning for its Chiba Works.

The high-efficiency gas turbine power generation facility will have an output of 45,000kW or more. The lump-sum contract also includes a heat recovery steam generator.

Additionally, the project involves decommissioning the petroleum coke power generation facility currently operating at Sumitomo Chemical’s Chiba Works.

After that, JGC would build the LNG-powered facility which has a “low carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions coefficient.” The facility is as a part of Sumitomo Chemical’s efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

By introducing this facility, Sumitomo Chemical plans to reduce CO2 emissions at Chiba Works by 240,000 tons or more a year, equivalent to approximately 20% of the plant’s total annual CO2 emissions.

JGC did not disclose the value of the deal.
