South Korea’s HJSC develops LNG bunkering vessel

South Korea’s HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (HJSC) said it has won approval from classification society Lloyd’s Register for a new LNG bunkering vessel.

The shipbuilder, previously known as Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction, said in a statement on Thursday it obtained the approval in principle for a 7,500-cbm LNG bunkering vessel.

This is a new design and follows the delivery of the 5,200 cbm bunkering vessel, Engie Zeebrugge, now renamed to Green Zeebrugge, in 2017, HJSC said.

Japan’s NYK Line chartered this ship to Dutch supplier Titan in 2021.

The new LNG bunkering vessel developed by HJSC features two LNG tanks certified by the International Maritime Organization, enabling it to deliver 7,500 cubic meters of LNG via a ship-to-ship operation.

Also, HJSC says the dual-fuel (LNG/MGO) propulsion system ensures maneuverability and operational efficiency.

In particular, HJSC developed the LNG bunkering vessel as a ballast-free vessel that can operate without the inflow and outflow of ballast water, it said.

HJSC noted it has already developed a methanol-ready 5,500-teu containership and a 7,700-teu LNG dual-fuel containership.

In February, the company also won an order for two 9,000-teu methanol-powered containerships from HMM.
