MOL and Jera seal charter deal for newbuild LNG carrier

Japan’s shipping giant MOL has signed a new deal to charter one newbuild liquefied natural gas carrier to compatriot LNG trading and power firm, Jera.

MOL said in a statement on Wednesday it signed the long-term charter deal with a vessel operation management company funded by Jera.

It did not provide the duration of the charter.

According to MOL, this is the fifth contract for the two firms, following a time charter contract for four LNG carriers that were signed for Jera.

MOL said that Hanwha Ocean, previously known as DSME, will build the 174,000-cbm LNG carrier and deliver it in 2025.

The new vessel will feature MAN Energy Solutions ME-GA engine, which improves fuel consumption efficiency, with specifications that enhance its environment friendliness, compared to conventional LNG carriers, MOL said.

It will be 299.4 meters long and 46.4 meters wide.

MOL has a large number of LNG carriers on order at Hanwha Ocean and last year revealed charter deals for vessels being built at the shipbuilder and scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026.

Earlier this year, MOL ordered one LNG carrier at Hanwha Ocean scheduled for delivery in 2027.

The shipping firm has at least 14 LNG carriers on order at Hanwha Ocean, according to VesselsValue data.
