Blue Grid plans four Greek LNG fueling stations

Greece’s small-scale LNG player Blue Grid, a unit of Molgas, has revealed plans to build four liquefied natural gas fueling stations for trucks in Greece.

According to Blue Grid, the first two LNG stations will be located in Athens (Thriasio area) and Thessaloniki (Sindos area).

The firm expects to launch these stations in March 2024.

Blue Grid previously teamed up with Greece’s Elinoil for the LNG and CNG fueling station in Athens, while it will develop the Thessaloniki station with Kolokithas Fuels.

Back in 2021, Elinoil and Blue Grid created Greece’s first LNG fuel supplier for road transport, BlueFuel, to develop a nationwide network of filling stations for heavy-duty vehicles, enabling the use of LNG as a road fuel in Greece but also the wider region.

Elinoil transferred its 50 percent share in the JV to Blue Grid last year.

BlueFuel also recently purchased a biogas plant in Greece as it plans to produce bio-LNG for the heavy-duty road transport sector and the maritime industry.

As per the third station, Blue Grid said it will build the LNG station in the western port city of Patras in collaboration with Kolokithas Fuels.

The LNG firm expects to launch this station in October 2024.

Blue Grid said it plans to build the fourth station in Ioannina, but it did not provide the expected launch date.

This will be the first network of LNG fueling stations for vehicles in Greece.

Gmobility’s data shows that Europe currently has 673 LNG filling stations and Germany and Italy host the largest number of such stations with 169 and 140 stations, respectively.
