GTT secures LNG tank contracts from Samsung Heavy

French LNG containment specialist GTT has secured several orders from South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries.

GTT said in a statement that the orders include in total five LNG carriers and Samsung Heavy will build the vessels for unidentified international shipowners.

Also, the LNG carriers will each offer a total cargo capacity of between 174,000 cbm and 180,000 cbm.

Paris-based GTT said that the vessels will be fitted with a Mark III family membrane containment system.

GTT did not provide any additional information.

Denmark’s Celsius Tankers, a unit of Celsius Shipping, is the only owner that thas 180,000-cbm vessels on order at Samsung Heavy.

Celsius Tankers ordered one vessel at Samsung Heavy in November last year, boosting its orderbook at SHI to ten 180,000-cbm LNG carriers scheduled for delivery between 2023 and 2026.

As per the other vessels, Samsung Heavy recently won an order for two 174,000-cbm LNG carriers scheduled for delivery by February 2028.

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that US energy giant Chevron is behind this order.

Prior to this order, Samsung Heavy secured a contract from Japan’s MOL to build two LNG carriers and two LNG carriers earlier this year.

The shipbuilder also won two LNG carriers from Japan’s K Line in April.
