Spanish LNG imports, reloads drop in June

Spanish liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports and reloads declined in June when compared to the same month last year, according to Enagas.

LNG imports dropped by 22.5 percent to about 21.3 TWh in June and accounted for 74.6 percent of the total gas imports. In May, LNG imports reached some 24.7 TWh.

Including pipeline imports from Algeria, France, and Portugal, gas imports to Spain reached about 28.6 TWh last month, a drop from some 35.8 TWh in June last year, Enagas said in its monthly report.

Moreover, national gas demand in June dropped by 10.3 percent year-on-year to 26.1 TWh.

Demand for power generation declined by 27.6 percent year-on-year to about 9.5 TWh last month, while conventional demand rose by 4 percent to 16.6 TWh, the LNG terminal operator said.

Enagas operates a large network of gas pipelines and has four LNG import plants in Barcelona, Huelva, Cartagena, and Gijon.

It also owns 50 percent of the BBG regasification plant in Bilbao and 72.5 percent of the Sagunto plant, while Reganosa operates the Mugardos plant.

Enagas recently received the first tanker at its El Musel terminal in Gijon.

Russia biggest LNG supplier, US volumes dip

The six operational Spanish LNG regasification terminals unloaded 23 cargoes last month, 6 cargoes less when compared to June 2022, according to Enagas.

Russia was again the biggest supplier of LNG to Spain in June with 7.67 TWh, a drop from 8.75 TWh last year. Russian volumes accounted for 26.8 percent of all of the Spanish gas imports in June, the data shows.

US LNG volumes to Spain halved from about 10.6 TWh in June 2022 to 5.29 TWh last month.

The Bonny LNG plant in Nigeria supplied some 2.87 TWh to Spain last month, down from 3.84 TWh in June 2022, while the Peru LNG plant supplied some 2.78 TWh to Spain.

Other LNG sources in June include Algeria, Egypt, and Qatar, the data shows.

LNG reloads down

Spanish LNG terminals loaded about 0.39 TWh in June, down 46 percent compared to some 0.73 TWh in June 2022, and also down when compared to 2.16 TWh in May.

The Cartagena LNG terminal reloaded about 0.18 TWh of LNG, followed by Bilbao with about 0.12 TWh.

On the other hand, the number of truck loads at the LNG terminals rose by 16.1 percent year-on-year to 937, the data shows.

The Barcelona and Huelva LNG terminals each completed 200 truck loads in June, followed by Sagunto with 163 truck loads and Cartagena with 149 truck loads.
