GSI kicks off work on LNG-powered PCTC

China’s Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) has started building the first LNG-powered pure car and truck carrier for Citic Financial Leasing and a joint venture led by Cosco Shipping.

GSI said in a statement it held on Wednesday a steel-cutting ceremony for the LNG dual-fuel PCTC (Hull No. 22110006) with a capacity of 7,000 ceu.

GSI says the vessel is owned by Citic Financial Leasing, a unit of Citic, and chartered by Guangzhou Yuanhai Automobile Shipping, a joint venture of Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers, Shanghai International Port Group Logistics (SIPGL), and SAIC Anji Logistics.

VesselsValue data shows that Citic Financial Leasing ordered this and two more PCTCs at GSI for about $92 million per vessel in February last year.

The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2025.

In March this year, GSI announced an order for three more LNG-powered PCTCs from Guangzhou Yuanhai Automobile Shipping.

GSI said at the time that it has 22 LNG-powered PCTCs on order, ranking first in the world.
