KR OKs HD Hyundai Heavy’s LNG-powered VLGC design

South Korean shipbuilding giant HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has secured an approval in principle from compatriot classification society Korean Register (KR) for an LNG dual-fuel very large gas carrier design.

The newly approved LNG dual-fuel VLGC, jointly developed by HD HHI and KR, utilizes both marine gas oil (MGO) and LNG as fuel and incorporates two LNG fuel tanks positioned on both sides of the open deck, according to KR.

HD HHI executed the ship’s basic design, established the layout of fuel supply pipes and the gas detection system, and designed the LNG fuel tank using their technical expertise.

Moreover, KR verified the safety, suitability and the regulatory compliance of the design by reviewing national and international regulations, leading to the issuance of the AIP for the LNG dual-fuel VLGC.

Kim Yeontae, executive VP of KR technical division said that the classification society had been focusing on the development of eco-friendly technologies relevant to LNG for several years as it considers LNG “a major alternative that can meet the international regulations.”

Jeon Seungho, HD HHI’s senior executive VP and CTO welcomed this approval and said that HD HHI had been working to develop eco-friendly fuel propulsion ships such as LNG using its accumulated design technologies.

KR handed over the AIP to HD HHI on Thursday during the Gastech conference in Singapore.

Prior to this, KR also signed a memorandum of understanding with K Shipbuilding, Sunbo Industries, and Dongsung Finetec develop a 12,000-cbm liquefied CO2 (LCO2) carrier powered by LNG.
