Gate picks contractors for fourth LNG tank and additional regas capacity

Dutch Gate LNG terminal in the port of Rotterdam has selected contractors to execute the expansion of the facility with the fourth storage tank and additional regasification capacity.

Dutch gas grid operator Gasunie and compatriot storage tank firm Vopak recently took a final investment decision to build a new 180,000 cbm LNG storage tank and additional regasification capacity of 4 Bcm per year at Gate.

The two firms will invest about 350 million euros ($372 million) in this project.

Gate said in a statement on Friday it has selected France’s Vinci Construction Grands Projets – Entrepose Contracting to build the LNG tank.

Moreover, Gate picked Spain’s Sener for new balance of plant facilities and Sacyr Projecta for owner engineering services.

Sener was also part of the consortium that delivered the Gate LNG facility back in 2011 and the Spanish firm also won last year a contract to boost Gate’s sendout capacity with an additional 1.5 Bcm.

Vinci Construction said in a separate statement that its unit Vinci Construction Grands Projets will build the 180,000 cbm LNG tank for 160 million euros ($170.5 million).

Between 2007 and 2011, Vinci Construction Grands Projets also built three Gate’s 180,000 cbm LNG storage tanks.

“Gate terminal is delighted with the cooperation with these contractors over the past period and look forward to a fruitful cooperation throughout the project execution phase,” Jarmo Stoopman, Gate’s managing director said in the statement.

BP and PetroChina

Two energy giants already rented out the new capacity under long-term commercial agreements.

UK-based BP and a unit of PetroChina agreed to book long-term capacity.

They will each acquire 2 Bcm per year of regasification and also corresponding storage capacity for a period of 20 years.

Gate expects the new capacity to be ready for operation by the second half of 2026.

Following the completion of all planned projects, Gate will have a total regas capacity of 20 Bcm per year and four LNG tanks with 720,000 cbm of storage capacity.
